During the era of pandemic-induced isolation, many people turned to the cultivation of plants for a sense of fulfillment. These plant owners have channeled their loneliness and general lack of social interaction into a desire to nurture other beings, even if they are not human. This series of portraits, consisting of members of the Athens Plant Exchange Facebook community in Athens, Ohio, explores the relationship between plants and the people who care for them and offers a glimpse into their world of symbiosis. Each person photographed believed that plants had helped their well-being, whether it was by improving their mental health, occupying their time, or helping them find community.
