Ohio has been described by political analysts and media as a microcosm of the political winds of the country — a swing state. As the country wrestled with polar opposites between the parties, the people in rural southeastern Ohio, the foothills of the Appalachians, mirrored those divisions. The 2020 election season brought people to participate more, and earlier than ever before. In Athens County, more than 50% of registered voters had submitted absentee or mail-in ballots before Election Day. The levels of enthusiasm and anticipation for this election’s results were apparent throughout Athens, Scioto, Washington, Meigs, and Gallia Counties, where I documented official campaign events, party volunteers, and people with their political signs.
